Harsch SVP, Retail Division Michael Corbitt Talks Retail Trends in California Centers

California Centers Magazine explored the latest trends in retail in its August 2016 issue. Harsch Investment Properties SVP, Retail Division Michael Corbitt was among the experts interviewed in the article focusing on the trend of niche grocers entering California markets.

According to the article, there has been a buzz in California this year surrounding grocer expansions, spin-off concepts, and foreign arrivals, with 365 by Whole Foods Market, Aldi, and Gelson's leading the charge. These grocers aim to serve the needs of targeted niche markets in order to thrive in the highly competitive market for grocery goods.

One trend is to balance high-quality, health-conscious goods with low prices. Corbitt explains the strategy of 365 by Whole Foods Market: "This concept appeals to the Millennials, with the lower price points and partnerships with outside businesses like vegan restaurants, coffee bars and other desirable offerings. With online threats like Amazon Fresh and Instacart, several grocery operators are changing or modifying their brands to become more competitive."
